From 30 April it is 70 per cent cheaper to call, use the internet and send text messages when we are abroad. Last year the EU decided to phase out roaming charges. Next summer it will cost no more than if you were at home.
The high roaming charges for mobile users have been an irritation on trips abroad. A first step towards cheaper charges was taken on 30 April, when operators in the EU may charge at most five céntimos extra per minute for outgoing calls, two céntimos per text message and five céntimos for each megabyte of data.
The secretary general of the European consumer organisation BEUC (Organización Europea de Consumidores), Monique Goyens, says that abolishing the roaming charge is a logical step in the EU’s plan to build a digital single market.
On 15 June 2017 roaming charges will be scrapped altogether, writes the news agency EFE.
