Ikea Ibérica’s managing director Toga Öncü confirms that the multinational still wants a store in Alicante, and also in Girona, Granada, Pamplona, Tarragona and Vigo.
The management said this at a ceremony in Madrid where they reported that over the past year (ending in August) they had turnover in Spain of 1,466 million euros, 5.9% more than the year before. Sales rose in every region where IKEA operates.
The company, which also sells online in Spain, has 8,676 employees in Spain and has created 518 new jobs during the year. Toga Öncü pointed out that in 2020 they will open a new store in Almería and in May 2018 a new customer service centre in Valladolid.
The reason for the delays in establishing a store in Alicante is that the company has met strong opposition over the choice of site. It is local business that has protested strongly against the plans.
