All Spanish airports must sell water for 1 euro

All airports in Spain will be required to sell bottled water for one euro. Aena has already introduced this at some of the airports, but now it is being extended to apply to all of them.

According to the daily newspaper El País, vending machines must offer small 33-centilitre bottles for one euro, and where there are half-litre bottles the same price applies to those. The decision applies not only to vending machines, incidentally, but also to the convenience shops at the airports.

Already now the airports of Tenerife South, Gran Canaria, León, Vitoria and Salamanca offer water for one euro.

The reason for the measure is that passengers have complained to the ombudsman Francisco Fernández Marugán that basic products, and water in particular, are too expensive at airports.

In his latest annual report, Marugán reported that they had reached an agreement with Aena to make drinking water available to the public and to cap the maximum price of bottles of water both for the catering trade and in the machines; the agreed price was 1.60 euros. But now Aena has gone a step further and reduced the amount to one euro itself.
