Figures from August show that more tourists headed for the province of Alicante than for the capital Madrid. The figures also show that in total 15 per cent fewer people visited the region compared with the year before. Even though the total number of travellers fell, the number of foreigners heading for Alicante and the Costa Blanca rose.
What explains these figures is that it was mainly Spaniards who travelled here in the summer of 2021 because of travel restrictions in Europe, while the summer of 2022 was the first in which foreigners could travel largely without restrictions. It also became easier for Spaniards to travel out of the country. The number of holidays outside Spain rose by 33% during this period.
Statistics from INE show that 1,244,149 people travelled to the province of Alicante. 1,099,907 travelled to Madrid during the same period. 1,093,511 travelled to Cádiz and 1,003,005 tourists to Málaga.
