The number of British property buyers risks falling
Twice as many Britons as Swedes buy property on the coast. That has been the case so far. But after the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the EU and with the pound falling, the number of British buyers of a second home in the sun risks dropping considerably.
According to figures from the Colegio de Notarios, compiled by the developers’ association in Málaga (Asociación de Constructores y Promotores), 2,399 homes were bought by Britons in 2014, which was 20 per cent of all foreign buyers.
That is twice as many as the Swedes, who accounted for 10.7 per cent of property purchases.
Across Spain as a whole, British citizens are also top among foreigners buying property in Spain. The regions of Valencia, Andalusia, the Canary Islands and the Balearics are the most popular.
During the first quarter of 2016, Britons bought 12,800 homes in Spain, according to figures from the land registry (Colegio de Registradores de la Propiedad). Next come the French at 7.87 per cent, Germans (6.94), Swedes (6.33%) and Belgians (6.10%).
700,000 Britons are said to have ties to Spain. Of these, 283,000 are registered here, according to the national statistics institute (Instituto Nacional de Estadística). Of Jávea’s 27,000 inhabitants (Alicante), 6,000 are British.
In the province of Málaga the number of Britons has fallen considerably in recent years because of the crisis. In 2013, 76,931 British citizens were resident in the province. This year the figure is 50,530, according to INE. A figure that now risks falling further, according to observers.
